1/19/2012 - Last Saturday, 1/14, there was a fund raiser at Moulton's Farm in Meredith for the Diane K. Kline (Kamercia) Memorial Scholarship Fund. Diane's husband, Duke, set up the fund in memory of his wonderful wife and Belknap alum. The fund awards scholarships to grads of Inter-Lakes High School to pursue their higher education. Visit Diane's page here on our site to learn about last year's recipient. Participants donated $25 each to the fund to launch a wish hot air balloon. I don't know how much money was raised but Duke bought over 100 balloons. To see a photo gallery of the event, go to this link: http://karenbobotas.photoshelter.com/gallery/Launch-a-Wish-at-Moultons-Farm-14Jan12/G0000n4vZtoLYOnU/1" See how many Belknapians or their offspring you can name in the pix. OH, AND BY THE WAY... DONATIONS TO THE FUND ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE! Belknapians should get involved with this each year.

1/9/12 Happy New Year to all. Would love to see some of you at The Launch-a-Wish to benefit the Diane K.Kline Memorial Scholarship Fund at Moulton Farm on January 14th, 2012 at 3:30 pm. (storm date 1/15) Tax deductible donations can be made to DKKMSF-PO Box 526 Center Harbor, NH 03226. Check out video on the website! www.dkkmsf.org . Hope to see you at the event. 1/2/12 - Happy New Year. I was just thumbing through the Fan's Choice issue of Sports Illustrated and was taken back to 1970. Please check out page 79. Standing behind Grete Waitz, who won numerous marathons and passed last year is fellow Belknapian Miles Synder. It appears to be the start of the 1979 NYC Marathon. Miles did you finish? 1/1/12....Hoping all have a happy & healthy New Year....The Gleckmans

12/23/11-Happy Holidays- Just thinking back to my first Christmas at Belknap, I could not wait to go home and visit with my family then I could not wait to return. Maybe the magic of the snow, the frozen lake that reflected the full moon like a mirror, the true attraction I believe was returning to my friends! Mona '72

11/23/11 - Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Belknapians. Gene. '68

11/1/11 - Hi everyone! The Presentation that I made is now on the Centre Harbor Historical site. You can go to http://chhistory.com/2011/10/30/belknap-college/ and listen to it there. It was not a concise history of Belknap, but just my recollection of my 4-years there, 1964 - 1968. I hope that someday that one of us will be able to write a more detailed history. It is about 1-hour long. I hope you all like it. Gene, '68

10/25/11 Yup, it did happen! I was there. A Wales Tails game, on the Mount, gone bad. Anonymous '70

10/24/11 Belknapians would be proud of the presentation Gene McCaffrey gave to the Historical Society. The presentation by Gene was well organized, well presented and well received. Following the presentation there were numerous questions for Gene about the College and the students. Gene also presented the Historical Society with some yearbooks and a Meredith publication extolling Dr. Frye when the school opened in 1963 that was given to him by another Belknap Alumnus.

On a less serious note one question that came from the audience was whether or not it was true that some Belknap students released the mooring lines on the Motor Vessel Mt. Washington. We could not verify the story at the time, but I have it from knowledgeable sources that yes that did occur. P.S. The Mt. Washington is still in service on the Lake. Anyone who wants to fill me in on the story can write to me at mdsehl@earthlink.net - This alleged incident is well beyond any criminal statute of limitations in New Hampshire or Puerto Rico.

Ken Sutelman organized a gathering of Belknapians at the Mug on saturday 10-22-11, which was fun. Among the notables who showed up in addition to alums were Dr. Messky and Dr. Marshall. I think a good time was had by all. Thanks Ken!

10/22/11 -- I was in Center Harbor this past Thursday, Oct 20, and I was honored to give a short presentation to the Center Harbor Historical Society. Mike Sehl and his lovely wife Suzanne were also there to give me moral support. The presentation lasted about 45 minutes. It was not a concise history of Belknap, but my rememberances of my 4-years. It was recorded and taped and will be on the Center Harbor Historical site in the next few days. Their site is www.chhistory.com.

I hope you have a chance to watch or listen to it. Gene. '68

9/27 - Thanks Bill and Gene for your responses. I thought it was strange to find Dr. Frye's name on the bench. Rich De _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

9/27/11 - Royal M Frye and Royal D Frey are two different people. Col Royal Frey was a famous member of the Air Force. The bench is for him. Google Royal Frey. Bill 66

9/26/11--Hi Rich. Sorry for the delay in getting the info on Dr. Fyre. According to what i have been able to get, Dr. Frye worked for the USAAF during WW II in the Air Materiel Command. When the Air Force became a seperate service they retained the name but made a slight change to Air Force Materiel Command. It is still located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH. That is where the AF has their AF Museum as you mentioned. Gene. '68

Gerda

Just discovered these photos site.Interesting although many of the names and faces are unknown to me. Perhaps the years have taken their mark on the memory. The passage of time has found a way to bring about many things. Our views on life and death, the importance of the material in comparison with spiritual wealth. Most important is the amount of hair we have, and it's color. It is however reassuring to know that some things defy the passage of time. To mention the excitement of the birth of a child, the color of the NH in the case of only two. But the time is clear, it is fitting to show how some of these photos came. The worst player in the history of John Whale Tales Ekdhal still looking for a game. Gerda

9/14- Thanks Gene. The bench is right at the entrance to the museum. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

9/14/11 - Rick. That may be one and the same. Dr. Frye did work with the Air Force prior to finding Belknap. I have forgotten what the exact job was, but I have it written down on his bio when I give the talk to the Center Harbor Historical Society on October 20. I will get back to you. Gene. '68

9/13 I recently went to the Air Force Museum at Dayton, OH and in the memorial park there is a bench with the name Royal M. Frey. Is this the same Royal M. Frye as the founder? I noted the difference in spelling however what are the chances of two Royal M.s. 9/11 - Sad news. Our friend Mel Borin passed away Thursday, 9/8/2011

8/20 - JBM - Belknapian makes good! - Read this article about hurricane forecasting in The Christian Science Monitor which in large part is taken from an interview with the Director of NOAA's Hurricane Research Div., Belknap's own Dr. Frank Marks: http://www.csmonitor.com/Science/2011/0815/Fine-art-of-hurricane-tracking-Push-is-on-for-the-7-day-forecast

Frank is the scientist who tasks the research plane crews and often flies himself through the eye of a hurricane. Who would have thought this easy going guy would live on the edge?

8/5/11 - Mick Terrone - To add to Mark’s comments, I can confirm that it was only the issue of finances and Belknap’s ultimate inability to secure the HUD Grant for our permanent library the sounded the death knell for the college. The entire administration worked long and hard to secure the grant. And that included Dean Taylor. As I recall, numerous students attempted to keep the school going after the Board of Trustees officially voted to close Belknap. I believe the student body in 1973 was just as committed to Belknap as it was in 1967-68 during the Greens for Graduation campaign. They just dressed differently and had other means of getting high - just as college students did on most every other campus around this country. I suppose the ‘63/’64 alumni shuddered to think of the lifestyles of the ‘69/’70 crowd.

In reality, the students who attended Belknap during 1971-74 have contributed at least as much to the enduring legacy of Belknap College as any group. This web site is the product of one of those alumni and the reunions which we now enjoy are largely the product of a closely knit group of female alumnae (some of whom had the college close before they could graduate). This group has essentially served as the nucleus of our efforts to expand their reunions to involve all alumni.

Belknap has a small, finite and ever shrinking alumni base. At our advanced ages, I think its fair to say we have a lot more in common to enjoy sharing than we have to hold against each other. The wonderful campaign of 2010 that culminated in the historical marker and the granite bench that now grace Center Harbor were the product of the combined support of Belknap alumni from throughout the College’s history. I believe we all feel similarly about our great experiences at Belknap and we can all be proud to call ourselves alumni - and respect each other and participate as actively as possible while we can physically do so.

7/17/11....Mark Gleckman. Very mixed feelings on Suellyn's previous post. Attending Belknap reunions and staying connected to a number very good friends Cindy and I made during our years in Center Harbor makes it obvious how important a role the school played in our lives. How it evolved from the mid-late 60's until its closing was interesting to live through, but inevitable. Without an endowment, Belknap was required to reach out to a population of high school, post grad, veteran or other adult learning candidates who reflected the times, and so the typical student attracted to Belknap from 1969-1973 was different than the student who applied in 1964-1968....not any better or worse....just different.

Being there during the bridge years and seeing how the beer drinking, intramural football and whales tails population evolved into the pot smoking, anti-establishment and moratorium population was a great learning experience, as I'm sure it was at a number of other small and struggling colleges that also closed in the early-mid 70's.

I have only positive memories of Belklnap, even as I write this post! The story would make for a great screenplay.

7/14/11: I attended Belknap Collegw from 1967 to 1971. I never thought of my school as a haven for draft dodgers. Many good friends served in the service before and after attending Belknap. The school changed drastically after the DR. FRYE left and not for the better. I am sorry Dean Taylor, you and your cohorts ruined the school, as far as I am concerned. The quality of student accepted really went downhill. After I left Belknap, I joined the Army. I was NOT drafted. I married my commanding officer. i went on to graduate from nursing school. I loved going to Belknap the first 2 years. I think of Jay, Flip, DAD and the others with love. I am in touch with Diana and Paula often. But is is with great saddness I think of what happened to Belknap in the last years and of its closing! Suellyn (Su) Nancarrow Hunt

6/22/2011 - Hi everyone. I was asked by the Center Harbor Historical Society to give a brief history of Belknap College on October 20, 2011. I don't know why they asked me, but I have started to make notes.

I am hoping that many of you can give me some highlights of your time spent at Belknap, especially the years of 1968-1973. I graduated in 1968 and spent my next 4 years in the Air Force. So if any of you could help, it would grately be appreciated. You can email me at my personal email address, gene_mccaffrey@yahoo.com. When you write the email, please make sure you type in BELKNAP in the subject line so that I don't delete it thinking it is SPAM. Thanks, Gene '68

Abbott E. Rice, Sr. 79, a 40-year resident of Hudson died peacefully at his home in the presence of his loving family on Thursday April 28, 2011, following a brief illness.

April 10, 2011 - Don Leavitt, a former Belknap College student was one of the two guys who bought the Belknap College Estate. The former Founders Hall was in serious disrepair when they bought it, but they did extensive renovations and turned it into the Red Hill Inn. They would give discounts to former Belknap students during the off season. My wife and I stayed a couple nights in the third floor bedroom that was on the far right hand side of the building with one heck of a view! Here's a link: http://www.innsite.com/inns/A031047.html Larry Mack '70

April 8, 2011 - Anne Schroeder sent me this to Gene McCaffrey

You may have forgotten, but we DID own Founder's Hall. We bought it as a Limited Partnership in 1986; I never knew who was in the partnership. We had no say in the running of the Red Hill Inn which it was then called. Two guys, non-students, bought it, fixed it up to a beautiful state which included a 4star restaurant. The bedrooms upstairs were all tricked out in Victorian furniture, linens and things. It was gorgeous. The fireplace room was a lounge, very inviting with a warming fire going.

I'm not sure why more people don't remember this fact.

Here's a cool painting as it was in winter of 2000.

http://www.northrup.org/photos/New%20England/nl-20.htm

This site mentions the Inn, no longer in business of course, because NHMF people bought it.

http://travel.yahoo.com/p-hotel-369004-red_hill_inn-i;_ylt=AjuzZkD6h7.7b4ZxPEhIcOriphQB

If you don't follow any of these links, which basically lead nowhere because the Inn is no longer in business, this is the one link you'll like - the financials for the NHMF.

http://www.nhmf.org/pdfs/NHMF_2008Audit.pdf

On page 8, about half way down, see this: "In December, 2001, the Festival purchased from the former Red Hill Inn property for $2,031, 897...."

Our limited partnership ended in 1996 I think it was. It had been a 10 year commitment while the property was made into a business, the Red Hill Inn. When the LLP ended, I remember that it was going up for sale and the NHMF was the buyer. They were not the only party interested, but other financing fell through. The Inn continued to operate after the LLP ended - an additional 5 or 6 years. That puts the NHMF in ownership from about 2001 to ... whenever the NHMF sold/lost it... or currently. The Inn was in business from 1986 to 2001.

The guys that owned the Inn bought another property, some sort of castle near Moultonborough, and intended to make it into another B&B. Then, one of them died. It was really sad. They had been partners for a very long time. I lost track of what happened to the survivor and whether the castle project ever happened. I do remember that it took a long time for the NHMF to get its act together and purchase the college buildings. There was a lot of speculation as to what would happen with the property. Upkeep must be a nightmare, you know? And not at all conducive to storing musical instruments in the winter! What were they thinking??

Also, on the bottom of page 6 there is a statement about the repairs, or lack there-of, by the NHMF on the buildings. No wonder when you saw it there was a lack of repair! They weren't making any money. Non-profit as it was, some money had to be coming in from endowments or somewhere to pay off that loan. Sounds like a pipe-dream that sounded so wonderful, summer evenings on the grass, looking out over that fabulous view and listening to music, only to wake up in 6ft of snow, the roof leaking and owing $2M bucks! Very sad, really.

Yet, that amazing building with its varied history lives on. What will happen next? I hope someone chronicles it.

And that's the "backstory" of Belknap College as the Red Hill Inn! <G>

It's interesting reading. The Belknap website may find it interesting. You can edit it if you’d like and post it if you think it fits the mood of our forum, the one for the college.

Here’s a strange little “forum“ I just found. No one has posted anything on it for several years. Hard to say who posted at all, or, even who started it.

http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-Detail/52-Symphony-Ln_Center-Harbor_NH_03226_M35943-20649

Above is the Realtor.com/Coldwell Banker listing for $1,695,000 for Founders Hall (now called 52 Symphony Lane). Check out the 24 pictures. It has 11,000 finished square feet along with 9 bedrooms, 12 baths and 56.7 acres and the other buildings on the old campus. Considering that it can be redeveloped into a profit-making B&B and the buyers market, I have to think the price would have to come down fairly significantly - depending upon the degree of disrepair.

April 7, 2011 - I happened to go onto the New Hampshire Music Festival website the other day, and I read that they have put their Center Harbor location up for sale. That of couse was Founders Hall when we all went to Belknap. The price for the buildings and land was appraised by Coldwater-Banker at $1,690,000. Too bad we don't have a philanthropist who is a grad of Belknap who could buy it and we could donate it to the Town, so that it could never be used to subdivide for housing. Last October when we had the Reunion and Dedication, Mike Sehl, his wife Suzanne and I took a ride up to the Hill and I noticed that Founders Hall needs a lot of repair work on the exterior, we were not able to get inside. The exterior panelling under the small classroom window on the 1st floor was rotting out and it is apparent that the NHMF did not take care of the property. What a wonderful view that it still has. You can see Red Hill and Little Squam from standing on the concrete landing in front. I guess things have to change, but it is a shame really. Gene '68.

March 3, 2011

Major kudos to Fat Wally for effectively promoting his town and the Jersey Shore. Moreover, he showed remarkable restraint by: 1. Not mentioning he needed a ride to the river from Hartung because "The Healy was back in the shop";) 2. Not mentioning he was unanimously voted as having the "Best Hair - Male or Female" at the recent reunion;) 3. Not mentioning that Wally Jones had recently moved to Rumson:)

Great job, John and Mo!!!

01-12-2011 Hi this is Miles class of 1973. How could we have been draft dodgers if we were never drafted? I beleive the man from Tuftonborough should man up and go fight the Taliban.

01-06-11

I served as the Associate Dean of Students at Belknap from 1969 to 1972, and would like to respond to the issue raised by the gentleman from Tuftonborough, re: that Belknap College was a haven for "draft dodgers". First, however, I would like to thank him for serving and tell him that I respect his decision to join the military and risk his life in Korea and Viet Nam.

I had the opportunity to ask hundreds of students the question, "Why did you choose Belknap?" Never once did anyone tell me "to avoid the draft and the Viet Nam war." Young people came to Belknap to exchange urban living for country living; for the benefits of a small college; for specific majors; and in a few cases, "to get away from my parents." Could it be that some were there for a deferment? Certainly, but not in any significant numbers. It might be noted that Dick Cheney (perhaps a hero to the Tuftonborough resident?) had at least six student deferments to keep him safely from the reach of the military.

I do recall many serious conversations, discussions, and passionate debates about the military complex and the Viet Nam war. And, as the word debate suggests, there were proponents and opponents. Democracy in action - the very democracy our friend from Tuftonborough fought to defend.

The man's threat that 100,000 motorcyclists would swarm into Center Harbor to destroy public property suggests that he might be knee- deep in legal woes if it ever came to pass, especially if he were to be identified as the ringleader: conspiracy to riot and commit mayhem; destruction of government property (the Town of Center Harbor); felony vandalism...etc., etc.

This proud veteran voiced his opposition to the bench, marker, and sign and in the course of his remarks made two erroneous assumptions. The first being that students only attended Belknap to avoid the draft and the second being that the 100,000 bikers (200,000 if they are riding double!) would be staunch military suporters and/or veterans anxious to dismantle the gifts Belknap alumni gave to the town that welcomed and supported them for 10 years. I addressed the first assumption earlier and now challenge the second one. Valid public opinion polls show that in May of 1968 only 40% of Americans supported the Viet Nam war. By May of 1971 that number had dropped dramatically to just 28%. I would suggest, then, that because many of the potential invading bikers were no doubt young people during the period in question, as many as 72% of them could have been opposed to the Viet Nam war and that not all of them served in the military. The bikers have other things to do when they come into New Hampshire and I don't believe pillaging and plundering Center Harbor will be on their list of priorities.

The man from Tuftonborough certainly has a right to his opinions but he does not have a right to be wrong in his facts as he is in this instance.

Donald L. Taylor, Former Associate Dean of Students

During the period of the Viet Nam War, whether you went to Harvard, Yale, Boston College or Belknap College, you were allowed a deferment as long as you were a full time student. Once you Graduated or dropped out you either had to enlist in the Military or receive a Draft Notice. Some un-patriotic individual’s decided to leave the country so they wouldn’t have to deal with the Military. They were the real Draft Dodgers. Some individuals wanted to finish their education first and then deal with the Military while some wanted to go right in the Military after High School and possibly go to College after their enlistment was up. I graduated from Belknap in 1967 and that Fall joined the Massachusetts Army National Guard. (This was an Armor Unit - I had put my name on a waiting list almost a year before I graduated). I spent 6 months on Active Duty for Basic Training and AIT. For the next 6 Years I attended Drills one weekend a month and two weeks every summer.

Like everything in life, it’s all about choices. Apparently, that motorcyclist is frustrated because he must have made the wrong choice and wants to take it out on the people that made the choice to get their education and degree first and then make a choice about the Military after Graduation. I don’t think I was prepared for the Military at 18 like I was at 22. If I didn’t get my degree first I might never have gone to College after the Military, because I would have felt it’s time to start working. I was in the Business Administration Curriculum and enjoyed a Retailing Class with Abbot Rice. After my Active Duty I took a job as an Executive Trainee for a Majot Dept Store and ended up with a Store Retail Management career for 20 Years and then self employed with my wife in Retail Type businesses for the next 20 years. Without that Retailing Class I’m sure my Career would have been completely different and not as fun and rewarding as my Retailing and self-employment career turned out to be.

I wouldn’t worry too much about 100,000 motorcyclist’s coming into Center Harbor. The same College Deferment was offered to anyone attending any accredited College in the Country. So they will have to go to every College town in the Country and make their threats of retaliation of Draft Dodgers. I don’t think that will happen.

~Peter Beharrell Class of 1967

12/29/2010 - If anyone doubts the patriotism or loyalty of Belknap students, they should look at this picture of the Belknap Brigade:

This is the Belknap Brigade – Belknap College students who were members of the 368th Engineers Battalion, U.S. Army Reserves, Laconia, N.H.

Pictured are: (Front row) L to R: John Shaw, Steve Tronec and Ronnie Ulm;

(Middle Row) L to R: ½ of Marty Burns, Bob Hormell, Paul O’Brien, Mark Bloom and Drew Cochrane;

(Back Row) Mick Terrone, Dick Massimilla, Bill Alexson, (Sorry, I forgot this fellow’s name), and the late John Cattani.

Belknap students were encouraged to join by Crew Coach Colin Norberg, who was a top attorney in Laconia and also the unit’s Commanding Officer in 1967.

Anyone want to identify these patriotic Americans?

12/29/10 - After I graduated from Belknap in 1968, I received my "Greetings" and instead of waiting to be inducted into the Army, I enlisted into the Air Force. I went to Basic at Lackland AFB, TX and then to Sheppard AFB, TX for Tech School. I graduated with honors as a Medical Service Specialist, Medic, and went PCS to Westover AFB, MA. I was assigned to the Medical Ward at the Base Hospital where I helped care for patients who did not require any type of surgery. Later, I was assigned to the Emergency Room at the Hospital where I learned how to suture, do EKG's and other types of emergency work. I volunteered for the ATH, Air Transportable Hospital, the AF version of a MASH unit. We were on stand-by 24/7, 365 in case the AF needed us to fly anywhere in the world without notice. Every week, I would drive down to the Flight Line and wait for a C-9A Nightingale an Aero-Medical Evacuation Plane, the Military version of a DC-9, and wait for the plane to land so we could welcome home the wounded who were coming home from Vietnam. I met so many hero's coming off of that aircraft. In 1970, I was transfered to RAF Lakenheath, UK, where again, I was assigned to the ER. As a Medic, I saw things that I thought I'd never see, gun shot wounds, knife wounds, and unfortunately, and occasional self inflicted M-16 gun shot wound. I don't have to discribe what that outcome was. Often times, I would work the 4:00 PM to 7:00 AM shift at Lakenheath, and I would be what is called the NCOIC, or Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge. I made Staff Sergeant (E-5) in 2 1/2 years and when it was time to be discharged, I was encouraged to re-enlist and go for my Tech Sgt, stripes. I was Honorably dischaged at the end of September 1972. I don't regret any moment of the time that I served my Country.

I honestly feel that Belknap played a role in making me a good Airman and a Junior NCO in the Air Force. Gene McCaffrey. Class of 1968.

12/28/2010 - I attended Belknap College during the scholastic years September 1964 through May 1966. I attended the Southeast Asian War Games in the Republic of South Viet Nam during the period of October 1968 through the middle of February 1969 when I was brought home on emergency leave due to illness in my family. I was a military police officer, provost marshall investigator and finally assigned to a security guard company at Long Binh from October 1968 to the end of February 1969. I spent Thanksgiving and Christmas of 1968 as well as my first wedding anniversary in Viet Nam. I first saw John Wayne in Green Beret outdoors in my company area at Long Binh. We all laughed at it.

In my first semester at Belknap, one of my roommates ended the semester (with a 4.0) average by leaving school and joining the marine corps. Later, he became a professor at John Hopkins University in Baltimore. Another friend of mine from my second year in Center Harbor left school and joined the Navy – He was wounded in Viet Nam, I have lost track of him over time. A girl friend of mine in my second year evidently joined the Army as I was sitting in my office at Redstone Arsenal Alabama, having a morning cup of coffee while reading the Army Newspaper Stars and Stripes. I turned a page and there she was “WAC of the Week”. The last I knew is that she lives back in Laconia. Mike (Yes I actually served in our Army) Sehl

12/28/10 - This is in answer to the e-mail asking for those of us with military experience to post: I attended Belknap from 1972 through its closure, after which I transferred to Lyndon State with most of the rest of the weather classes. Family pressures forced me to drop out of Lyndon State, after which I enlisted in the US Air Force. Thanks to the weather training I received at Belknap, I qualified as an enlisted weather observer. Later, I competed for and won a slot for advanced training leading to a degree in Meteorology from St. Louis University. The Air Force later sent me back to St. Louis University for a Master’s degree, and I was in line for a doctorate’s slot when the Berlin Wall came down and I wound up retiring as a Captain in 1994. A large part of my career aspirations was formed at Belknap. Under the tutelage of professors such as Drs. Derrickson and Woodard (both retired Air Force Colonels), I received nothing but encouragement in my aim to serve my country. I was also in the Belknap College Fire Department, working alongside several other military vets and future military and civilian service members. Just to name a few: Hugh Warner (Viet Nam US Army vet), Curt Osgood (a fellow US Air Force/Mass ANG Weather vet who worked for many years at Westover ANGB), William Geary (National Weather Service). Besides the military aspect, let me talk more about the Fire Department. Anyone who thinks of the students at Belknap as being pot-smoking, worthless hippies needs to talk to the members of the Centre Harbor and Lakes Region Mutual Aid Fire Departments. They’ll tell you of how many times the BCFD members stood alongside them in sub-zero weather, fighting to save someone’s home. Those are some of my proudest experiences. Captain William J. Bowne, USAF (Retired)

11/8/10 -- I have learned that many Belknap graduates went on to graduate school and received Masters degrees. I am interested in knowing about the Belknap graduates who went on to receive Doctoral degrees. I am interested in writing an article about this because Belknap was "unaccredited," but had very intelligent people attending the college. If you have earned a doctorate please leave the info here - academic area and school it was received from. Also, if you know of any Belknap graduates who received doctorates, it would be appreciated if you could leave the info here. I did read that J Neufell has a doctorate. It is nice to see how successful Belknap graduates have become. Thank you, Ed Caution

9/12/10 A while back Henry Scarfo and Jim Mulligan contacted me about the closing of Belknap College. These are some of the thoughts I passed along to them. They are meant to shed some light for our earlier alumni as to what happened that last final year. There are many stories that I hope others will share as we get closer to the reunion. Joe Ferraiolo

Hi Henry,

Joe Tutrone, Dick Garon and I were the guys who basically closed the lights and said the party was over. Joe and I sat on the Board of Trustees in 72/73 - 74. There was a lot of discussion that last summer as to whether to open for the 73-74 school year. Ed Dane was tired of pumping money into the place (can’t blame him) and Stewart Lamprey could see the property as a way to get the bills taken care of, and put a peaceful end to a noble adventure.

In early August the consensus of the group was to try to make a go of it, and the business office was instructed to announce we would open and to send out student invoices for the coming year. When students started to arrive in September for the opening of school, Joe and I were summoned to a Board meeting at Harts (the school opened on Tuesday, the meeting was on either Wednesday or Thursday). When we got there, the board sort of blindsided us with a meeting that was very cut and dried; the school would close in December. We both felt like we were at the Last Supper. We left the meeting and went to Dick's apartment and let him know, as he was the head of the Student Association, as to what had transpired. We then had to figure out what to tell the students and what we felt would be the next course of action we should take.

After a rather sleepless night, we decided to try to take the Board to court for fraud. They accepted our money and would not fulfill their agreement to complete the year. We hired a lawyer, John Shortlidge from Keene (I believe), and essentially demanded that they live up to their end of the bargain. George Falardeau was the president at that time, and also served as the Board's lawyer. He offered us as much support as he could, but not much else at that point. The faculty was not to my recollection doing much, although I may be wrong. There just seemed to be a lot of hand wringing until the student’s lawyer finally suggested that we sue the Board for the right to run Belknap College. This seemed to be a viable thought and with that crazy notion in our heads, we instructed John to file the papers which he did (to this day I still marvel that we did this and even more so that we pulled it off)

To make a long story short (for the time being), we were told in late October, early November that we could have the school. We formed an agreement with the faculty (Ed Meskeys Nancy Jane Jackson, and J. Paul Shenk) to run a Spring Semester under the name "The New School at Belknap". We would have our own charter (still don't know if we really did secure one), but could work under the name of Belknap College as a subsidiary. So if you want to be technical the school, as originally constituted, officially closed its doors in December 1973, but it continued under The New School at Belknap through May 1974. The new school held a registration in January and was able to attract 93 students. All classes were held at Kahle House and in May we held our graduation in the Church next to the Post Office. The last official graduating class had 21 Bachelor’s Degrees and 14 Associate Degrees conferred.

I'm sure there is much more that Joe T, Dick, Ed, Nancy-Jane and I could elaborate on and should at some later time. I have a box of stuff that I kept that may also be donated to the Town if they're interested. I hope this helps for now and as far as I'm concerned, the class of 74 was the last one out the door and who turned out all the lights.

9/6/2010 - James V. Neufell, Sr, father of Belknap grads, Jim Neufell and Judy Neufell Karr, passed today. He and his wife, Jim's and Judy's mom Angelina were loved by Belknapians. They always welcomed us into their home and if we were just stopping by, Mrs. Neuf always a great Italian dinner. They were truly wonderful people and are a great loss to Jim and Judy as well as any Belknapian who had ever met them. UPDATE ON BELKNAP COLLEGE MEMORIAL FUND & OCTOBER 22-24, 2010 REUNION

Hello Belknap College Alumni:

Thanks to alumni, faculty, administrators, and friends of Belknap College, we have raised $6,125 to purchase, install and dedicate a granite bench and a historical marker. This will occur October 23rd in Center Harbor. The project committee is very appreciative of everyone’s support and interest. This fund raising campaign on behalf of a school that closed more than 35 years ago is an impressive testament to the spirit of Belknap College that still lives strong within each of us!

Here is a progress update and next steps along with information on the October 22-24 reunion that we hope you will reserve on your calendar to attend. Among many fun events, we will officially dedicate the bench and historical marker to the people of Center Harbor.

If you haven’t already donated, your donation will still be welcomed. It will get your name listed as a donor for the two “projects.” Your money will help fund the bench, historical marker, the footing for the bench, installation, ongoing maintenance, the dedication event and any remaining surplus will help fund the reunion weekend.

Who is the Project Committee?

The Project Committee is comprised of Gene McCaffrey (’68), Biddy (O’Brien) Irwin (’68), Henry Scarfo (’69), and Mike Sehl (attended ’64-’65).

Who is the Reunion Committee?

The October reunion is principally being planned by Mona (Schofield) Phillips (’72) and Judy Neufell Karr (’74).

Where will the Bench & Sign be Installed?

On May 19th, Biddy met with the Center Harbor Selectmen. They were impressed with our fund raising efforts and were pleased with the designs for the bench and historical marker (Click DESIGNS to view the preliminary layouts.) They indicated their strong interest to participate in the October dedication and to accept the gifts. They even discussed who would speak on their behalf. They did suggest that placement of the bench should occur on the grounds of the Nichols Library and the historical marker would be placed near the bandstand.

On May 24th, The Center Harbor Selectman spoke with the Trustees of the Nichols Library and the Trustees expressed equal support and that the granite bench is a wonderful project. At the Trustees’ monthly meeting, they all agreed to place the bench in front of the red maple facing the old college on 25B across from the sign that is dedicated to Barbara Benoit. They also agreed to support us with a historical display of Belknap memorabilia.

The Planning Team’s original thought was to place the bench in Center Harbor with the historical marker “up the hill” on or near the grounds of the former Founders Hall, now owned by the New Hampshire Music Festival. We discovered that the future of the buildings and property owned by the Music Festival is uncertain and may be put up for sale. We also researched the feasibility of a historical marker with the State of New Hampshire that could be placed along 25B near the upper campus. We learned that there are many restrictions on the content of the State historical marker among which precluded use of the Belknap logo, and there was no guarantee that placement along 25B would occur or be permanent.

Costs, Bids, and Order Placement

Gene is coordinating the bench order with Swenson Granite Company in Concord, NH. The bench will be a little over 4’ high, and 5’ long. The Belknap Seal will be 12’ in diameter and will be placed in the center of the backrest. There will be lettering 1” high to the left and right of the seal. To the left it will say “A gift to the People of Center Harbor” and to the right “From Belknap College Alumni, Faculty and Friends.” Under the seal it will be “Dedicated October 23, 2010.” The granite that will be used on the back and seat is called WOODBURY POLISHED. The edges are rough cut and the back of the backrest is sandblasted. The Seal will be hand cut. Total cost including delivery is $2,417. There will be an additional cost to prepare the ground with either a cement base or with pavers. This is necessary so that the bench will not sink into the ground or tip over. Cost estimates for the base are in process and will be about $500. Biddy is discussing installation options with the Selectmen.

Mike has sent requests for quotes to three companies to produce a two sided historical marker that will look similar to the one on the project page of the Belknap website. The historical marker will be about 30” x 42” X 5/8” with the same text on each side with a 7’ post and 22k gold lettering. The cost including delivery is about $2,155.00. There may be a small additional cost for installation. Quotes were requested from Sewah Studios in Ohio, Catskill Castings in NY, and International Bronze in NY.

Both the bench and the historical marker will be installed in time for the October reunion. The balance of the monies donated will be used to support the dedication and the reunion. We will provide more details as plans are fully developed.

The Reunion

The 2010 reunion will be held in Center Harbor the weekend of October 22-24. Already, 88 alumni, faculty, administrators, and friends of Belknap have indicated their interest to attend. This is the reunion event that you don’t want to miss! Please indicate your interest in attending by adding your name to the Reunion 2010 webpage. If you don’t know how to add your name, just email Jim or Henry and we will add your name to the attendee list.

Mona and Judy are coordinating the reunion activities and it looks like a great weekend will be highlighted by the dedication of the granite bench and the historical marker. Here are the activities planned to date:

Friday, October 22: Evening at “The Mug”

Saturday, October 23: Dedication of granite bench and historical marker at Nichols Library (about 1:30)

· Coe House Reception (immediately following the dedication)

· Evening at “The Barn” (Waukewan Golf Club) followed by the band “In 4 the Time”

Sunday, October 24: Informal Farewell

5/12/10...Thank you to everyone who was able to donate something. And we know that there are many out there who could not donate due to the economic conditions, and to them a thank you also for your hopes and thoughts. We are in the process of getting the Committee's approval of the wording on the Bench and Sign. All of us on the Committee hope that you can come to the Reunion from October 22-24, 2010 in Center Harbor. We would not have made the goal without all of your help and donations. Please see the notes below about the Reunion, and if even if you are NOT sure that you can make it, go to REUNION 2010 and place your names there and a question mark. If you have been in contact with anyone in CLASSMATES and they are not in either the Alumni or Geocities list please call them or email them to let them know. A very sincere thank you to everyone, even if you could not donate. Gene, '68

4/22/10 It is important to know how many Belknapians will attend the reunion in October 2010! The Saturday Night Event with a "Band" can hold 175 people. We MUST know if we will need more space. PLEASE, if you even think you will attend, click on REUNION 2010 page on the sidebar and sign up. THANK YOU!

4/13/10 I asked The Inns and Spa at Mills Falls if the would once again extend a group rate for the reunion weekend, they said no for the weekend. They would do group rate during the week. I think the only exception would be if we were booking a "Ball Room" from them. We could not consider them. there large room was already booked. mona.

4/13/10 At the last reunion there was a group rate available at the Inns and Spa at Mills Falls. Anything similar this year? Steve Massas

3/15/2010 - Hi, all. I taught French at Belknap College from 1969 - 1973. I currently live in the Los Angeles area. Gail Hines let me know that there might be a reunion taking place in late 2010 and I was wondering if there was any news available. Thanks so much. Christine Stanley

2/21/2010 - See an interesting article on the founding of Belknap College by Thomas C. Devitt on the MEMORIES4 page.

2/16/2010 - We are getting very close to our project goal and only need a little more to get there. If you have not made a donation, please consider one now. Anything will help. Click on PROJECTS in the left tool bar to see how far we've come and to learn about the projects. You can send donations to: Belknap College Memorial Fund, C/O 182 Fletcher Road, Newport NH 03773-2214

2/5/10 Hi everyone! We have some updated information regarding our hope to place a plaque in or near the old Founders Hall. Right now the building and property is owned by the New Hampshire Music Festival. I received an email from them yesterday, 2/4/10, and they informed us that they are going to sell the property on College Road, Founders Hall and the surrounding porperty. The property has not been listed as of yet. That will make it impossible to consider putting any plaque on, in or near "Founders Hall." We are now thinking of approaching the Selectmen in order to place the plaque somewhere in the center of the Town. We will keep you up to date in future messages. The fundraising is slowing a bit, so if you have not given, please send in your donation at the address listed under my December 12, 2009 message. Thank you, Gene, '68.

1/25/2010 I think all will agree we had a wonderful weekend of friendship, new & old, at the Courtyard Villa in Lauderdale by the Sea. Frank and I want to thank everyone who had a hand in the planning of the event - it was great. Frank has posted video, just search fmarksjr at youtube.com. Anita Marks

11/26/2009 - it is with sad emotions that I drop this note to you, but Pat Hamilton passed away yesterday up at Dartmouth Hitchcock. His wife Mary has not announced any arrangements yet, but I will drop you a note when I hear from her. They had bought "Glenocke" estate, the old RobRoy McGregor place.

11/24/09 Hello everyone. Just for an FYI, FUNDRAISER letters will be going out to all Amumni who have addresses listed in the "alumni" section here in the website on November 30. The letter will be self-explanatory. Thank you all for your patience. If you have not updated your mailing addresses, please do so now so that you do receive the letter. If you only have an email address listed, a copy of the letter will be sent to you as an attachment. Thank you again, Gene.

11/7/09.....Hi Everyone! Please play close attention to the Message Board. We would like for all of you to update your mailing addresses in both the GEOCITIES and ALUMNI areas. Letters will be mailed shorlty in order to begin our fundraiser. IF YOU KNOW ANYONE THAT DOES NOT HAVE THEIR ADDRESSES ON HERE, Please get in touch with them and tell them of the upcoming fundraiser. ALSO, we hope to dedicate the Memorial(s) WHEN we HAVE a REUNION OCTOBER 22 THROUGH THE 24TH of 2010. Tahnk you, Gene '68

11/05/09...Agree totally with Mr. Mack,... on board with all three, but should have definite plans where the sign will be going before we order it. S. Kase '66

10/28/09...I'm fully on board for the granite bench and BCP4 plaque. I also want a sign, but I'm not sure that should be done until a suitable site has been finalized and the necessary permit or sanction has been granted by the state, town, or private party. The last thing we want is to purchase a sign and have no place to put it. I looked at both casting company web sites and Sewah seemed to have the better selection of signs and may be more a better known national company (they do business with NH). I'd like to see a side by side comparison between the two options once we know where the sign will be going. Thanks Gene and others that are working hard to get this done. Larry Mack '70

10/28/09...Gene, My vote's for all three--the sign from Catskill Castings, the bench and the BCP04 plaque. Steve Massas

10/27/09...Please go to the PROJECTS section in order to get the quotes for ALL of the suggested items. The sign, granite bench and the plaque. I hope that it is clear. If you have any questions, please go to the email listed at the bottom of the PROJECTS section and email them and we will try to clear anything up for you. Gene, '68

10/27/09...Hello everyone! Please continue to watch this site. Shortly we will have some news coming in regards to the fundraiser. I will update the cost on the PROJECTS side within a day or so. Gene '68

10/27/09....We have contacted the New Hampshire Music Festival, the owners of the property that we knew as Founders Hall or the Academic Campus, and we have asked if we could put a plaque on or near Founders Hall. The letter was sent out on October 5, and I called them the week on October 15th and they told me that they received the letter and that they will be having their annual meeting on the middle of November to consider the idea. I told them that we, the Alumni Association, would be paying for everything and that there would be NO cost to them. They asked if we would call them back later in November, and we will call them Thanksgiving week. If you go to the PROJECTS section on the left margin you can click on there and see the proposed plaque on the bottom of the page. Gene. '68

sharon Newham Kase '66...can't make the Jan reunion, but will definitely head up to NH for Fall 2010! Awaiting on news of where to send the check. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Hi Jim. We are working on the logistics regarding the accepting of donations. The bank that we choose will be in NH, and we will notify everyone what the name of the bank is and the address. We are also going to have a reunion in the Fall of 2010 when we dedicate the marker, bench or plaque, or a combination of them. I hope that you are able to get to the reunion in FL, I'm sure it will be fun. Gene, '68.

10/7/2009 - Jim McKenzie I love the idea of both the green plaque and the bench and would happily contribute to defray costs of both. My email is mckenzie@health.usf.edu if whomever is collecting can contact me as to payment method. I am in the Tampa, Florida area and will try to attend the reunion, though doubt anyone remembers me (was only there 1 1/2 years 70-71)

JANUARY IN FLORIDA

1/22,23,24/2010

Courtyard Villa and The Buena Vista 4312 El Mar Dr, Lauderdale -by-the-Sea, FL 33308

MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS IMMEDIATELY IF YOU WANT TO STAY HERE. THERE ARE ONLY 18 ROOMS TOTAL IN BOTH BUILDINGS. THEY WILL RENT IN SEASON

I stayed at Courtyard Villa in August and it was great. It is a small, older hotel with lots and lots of character. It has a roof top deck where we can sit and lounge, a great beach front sitting area and a small pool.

The rates are different between the two hotels. The rate for rooms at the Buena Vista are $169 plus tax for two full size beds and $199.00 for one king size bed corner room. We have 10 rooms at the Buena Vista. 3 have king beds and 7 have two full size beds. The rooms at Buena Vista face the city, not the beach. There is also a nice gathering area with full kitchen on the second floor and a big balcony with tables and chairs on the third floor, which faces toward the beach. The roof top has lounge chairs and a Jacuzzi.

The Courtyard Villa has 8 rooms. 4 that are ocean front with one queen bed and 4 that are courtyard view with one queen bed and a sofa sleeper. There is a small pool/hot tub in the courtyard. There is also a one bedroom and two bedroom apartment across the street. From $229

Where ever you decide to book, you always have access to the Courtyard Villa beach and pool.

If you plan on having any catering or music at your gathering, there is a charge for the 2nd floor of $250.00.

We do collect a deposit on each room when the reservation is made that is refundable if canceled more than 30 days in advance. As of right now, all of the rooms in the Buena Vista are open for rental. The Buena Vista sounds like the perfect place for your needs.

I hope this helps to answer your questions.

10/6/09...Today's count. GREEN MARKER.....5 BENCH.....3 PLAQUE.....1 MARKER & BENCH.....3 PLAQUE & BENCH.....2

10/4/09....Hi again Larry. I suspect that this Edward Dane is probably the son of our Trustee, but that is a guess. I don't remember any Dane going there, but I could be wrong. At any rate, the letter will be going to Deborah Karis Graham who is the Dirctor of Community Development. Gene.

10/3/09.....Hi Gene. According to the NHMF web site, there is an Edward N Dane on the Board of Directors. He might be a good contact if he is related to the Edward Dane who served as chairman of the college board of trustees for a good many years. Larry Mack

10/3/09.....Hi Mike. What has been discussed, over the last several months, and I'm guessing more than a couple of hundred emails between, Biddy (O'Brien) Irwin, Mike Sehl, Jim Mulligan, Henry Scarfo and myself, is to have the bench, which will have the College Seal on the back-rest along with the wording that will say, or close to it, 'WITH APPRECIATION, THE ALUMNI, FACULTY AND FRIENDS OF BELKNAP COLLEGE', placed in Town in the new park that the town is considering. The park will be near the town Library. The sign would be placed somewhere in the Town, again possibly in or near the park with the wording that you see in the PROJECTS section. The plaque, if we get the approval of the NHMF, hopefully can be placed ON the building and if they don't approve that at least near it and the plaque would be placed on a boulder. As soon as we have the complete price for the bench with the engraving we will then post the cost for everything. Right now, the only thing we are wating for is the final cost of the bench after the engraving. It will be at least a week or so for me to get the final cost of that, at least I hope. The Seal may look simple, but according to the engraver is very intricate. I know this is a bit wordy, but we, as a self-proclaimed committee I guess, want to make sure we get it right and that all of our friends and fellow Belknapians are pleased with what we do. Mike Sehl and his wife should get all the thanks for suggesting this beautiful idea. I do have to give a big thank you for the webmaster for setting up the special email for us. I hope this helps a little bit Mike. I apologize for the length. Please feel free to continue to ask questions, that is what we want. Of course, if the NHMF gives us the OK to put the plaque there that they will allow us to come onto the property to view it. If they ever sell it, I cannot answer that. Gene. WHEW!

10/3/09....Hey Gene, a few questions. Has a decision been made to place a plaque and/or bench at Founders Hall if the NHMF gives an OK? What about access to the property now or later if it changes hands? Is there going to be anything in the town? If the intent of the marker and bench is to keep the memory of the school and that 12 year period alive, I believe that an in-town location would have much greater visibility and impact than the NHMF site. Steve Massas

10/3/09...Hi Larry! A letter will be going out to the NH Music Festival on Monday, October 5, 2009 requesting their permission to put the plaque on or near Founders Hall. We are advising in the letter that the placement of the plaque will not cost them anything and that we will have a fundraiser to pay for the project. Of course we don't know how long it will take for them to respond, if they even do that. We are waiting for the cost of the engraving on the back-rest of the bench. I don't know if the granite company will "embed" the plaque into the back-rest of the bench. Something to look into. Gene, '68.

10/02....Another vote for the green marker and sign/bench combo. Feel the sign is the most important and it would probably get the most visibility down near the center of town. A bench in the park is a good idea, but even better would be to have it "up on the hill" by Founders Hall. The view of the Sandwich Range from there is to die for......well almost. Maybe NH Music Festival would like a nice looking granite bench up there and certainly the price would be right! I would favor a bronze plaque on the bench over engraving, as our sentiments for Belknap could be better expressed with the plaque. Larry Mack 70

10/2....The green marker sign & bench combination. The plaque might be too contemporary, without a Belknap look or feel to it. Mark Gleckman

10/1/09... The count as of today GREEN MARKER.....5 BENCH.....4 PLAQUE.....1 MARKER & BENCH.....3 PLAQUE & BENCH.....2

10/1/09...Hi Mick. I just checked the minutes of the Selectmen's Meeting of 9/16/09. The new park w
