April 21, 2012

April 21, 2012 Dear Belknapians; Some of you already know this but for those of you who do not, in 30 days I will be walking 39.3 miles as a participant in the AVON WALK for BREAST CANCER. I am walking with my daughter and a friend and we are doing this because we can. I would like to raise $10 a mile. Every $30.00 gets me closer. Of course any donation is a help and I hope you can help me get closer to this goal. Did you know that every three minutes another woman in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer? Every three minutes. Last year two dear friends were diagnosed and went through treatment. One is celebrating her recovery; one is being remembered as we walk on May 19 and 20, 2012 in Boston MA. I started this to remember Paula Adriance. This will be the third time for Kate and I. Nancy is our newest team member. Our Team is called The NEWPORT’S LOVELY LADIES. We are part of a group of Newport women who through their love for exercise, donate their time and efforts in walks and runs to support such causes at the Avon Walk, The Proudy, and Relay for Life. Although my dear friends Paula Adriance and Linda Boulanger died from other terrible cancers, I am committed to help offer hope to millions of other women and men who are battling this awful disease. Just this week another dear friend and a neighbor received that awful news, CANCER. It is the biggest challenge I have taken on and I am proud to say “I did it” and will do my best to do it again. Cancer never rests; cancer doesn’t know we are in a recession.

The funds raised are managed by the Avon Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity with a mission to fund access to care and finding a cure for breast cancer. They fund both local and national organizations in five key area: medical research, education and early detection, clinical care, and support services, all with a focus on the medically underserved. ANY research will help find cures for all cancer. Your support is critically important. There are no donations too small (or too large of course!): $10. can help a cancer patient get transportation for treatment; $30 can help someone purchase a wig; $100 can help an uninsured patient get a mammogram. Please consider sponsoring the Lovely Ladies by clicking on the link above (or maybe below) and making a secure donation or you can e-mail me and I can give you my address where you can send a check made out to Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

Thank you for your support. Biddy Irwin
