Information on Belknap College Alumni Projects
June 18, 2010: $ 6,400 dollars have been raised to date for the Belknap College Memorial Fund. We have obtained approval from the Center Harbor Selectmen and also the Trustees of the Nichols Library on whose grounds the Memorial Bench will be placed. We are still working with the Selectmen on the exact location for the Historical Marker. We have received bids from the granite company who will make the bench and from two companies one of which will be selected to make the Historical Marker. Orders will be placed shortly once final layouts have been approved.
Plan to attend the Belknap Reunion the Weekend of October 22 - 24. A dedication of the bench and marker will be part of a fun weekend. If you haven't indicated your intent to come to the reunion, go to the Reunion 2010 link and leave your name. IF YOU HAVEN'T YET SENT A CONTRIBUTION FOR THE BENCH AND MARKER, PLEASE CONTRIBUTE. While our $6,000 goal has been reached, we still need some dollars for ongoing maintainance and for costs of the dedication on October 23rd. Proposed marker, 4/17/2010 update. The Committee has received considerable input on the text for the marker including clarification that the last graduating class was in 1974. Below is the agreed upon text as of this date and you can compare this copy with the original proposed text that still appears below. Note that October 23, 2010 is the dedication date. If you have not yet reserved the weekend of October 22-24, 2010 for the Fall reunion, please consider it. This is when we will dedicate the Marker and bench. More on both projects will be provided as we conclude our fund raising and place the orders. We are still a few dollars away from our goal. If you haven't donated yet, PLEASE DO SO!
Proposed marker, 9/22/2009. This is a sample of a marker that a committee of BC alumni would like to erect near the old campus. We welcome your comments here and on the message board.
10/27/09.....We have 2 quotes for the marker. From the CATSKILL CASTING the price would be $2,259.00. This would include the cost of the dye (one time fee) of $350.00, the wording on both sides, $1725.00, Shipping $40.00, mounting pole (galvanized steel) $114.00 and shipping for the pole $30.00. The other quote would be from the SEWAH STUDIOS. The price would be close to $2500.00, we are adding the cost of the dye at $350.00 and would have gold leaf printing $190.00. The shipping and handeling is free. The size of the sign would be from 30" x 42" to 33" x 42".
This is an alternative to the marker. The town is planning a new park and they can make room for a becnch such as this. We will engrave the Belknap seal, without AD ASPERA PER ASTRA. The engraving would have "A Gift to the People of Center Harbor from Belknap College Alumni, Faculty and Friends" and would be UNDER the seal which would be on the backrest. The granite bench would be 5' long and 3' high I beieve they told me. The bench would cost $2377.00 which would INCLUDE THE COST OF THE ENGRAVING. Here is the breakdown. SPECIAL CUT LOGO $379.00, 5' GRAY BACKREST BENCH TOP $419.00, 5' BACKREST $520.00, BACKREST BENCH LEGS $309.00, LETTERING CHARGE, MINIMUM #309.00 AND DELIVERY DROP $220.00. There is NO sales tax. The quote is from SWENSON GRANTIE WORKS, Concord NH. The salesman suggested that we add 3% if we have it done in 2010 for increases in prices. I suggest that we add at LEAST $500 to have someone prep the area, place and level the bench. So we are looking at about $2877.00. It may be more or less.
Here are some examples of a plaque that we hope can be placed in or near Founders Hall This is a proposed rendition of the plaque that we talked about with the New Hampshire Music Festival about. It would have a FOREST GREEN BACKGROUND with gold (brass lettering). The size would be 15" x 12" and would cost $599.00 which includes UPS ground shipping and standard fastening. Again if they do not want us to place this inside Founders Hall we would have to purchase a "boulder" and have someone place it on there for us.
If we went with all 3, the sign, bench and plaque it would cost approximately $5976.00. That figure is using the high cost of $2500.00 if we go with SEWAH STUDIOS for the sign. Again, I am adding $500 in that figure so that we try not to run into any problems. I know that seems high but we all received a wonderful education and many of us made life long friends.
